How do I decide which nappies are best for me? You must decide on your priorities - cost, fibre, drying time How many nappies will I need? It all depends upon how frequently you wish to wash them. Assuming 6 changes a day around 15 nappies and 4 wraps should be sufficient for daily washing. Add another 5 nappies and 2 wraps if you wish to add on a day to the washing frequency. How much money will I save? In reality this will be a function of how many nappies you have, how frequently you wash them and what method of drying you select. On average using disposable nappies over 2.5 years with 6 changes a day the cost would be £923 (source: Women's Environmental Network). The cost of washing, drying and depreciation on the washing machine amounts to £133 over the same 2.5 year period assuming washing every other day i.e. based upon 20 real nappies. (source: Women's Environmental Network) - just add the price of your nappies to work our your cost saving. What do I need to get started? All you need is nappies, liners and wraps. You are also likely to need the following: nappy bucket with tight fitting lid Paper or fleece liners? Paper liners can be flushed away and are therefore more convenient. Fleece liners act as a one-way barrier helping keep your baby's bottom dry. PUL or fleece wraps? We recommend PUL wraps as the main nappy covers. Fleece wraps are excellent for overnight or if your baby has sensitive skin due to the superior breathability. Do I need to soak the dirty nappies? No just add a cotton bud soaked in tea tree oil or lavender oil to the bottom of the bucket to keep things fresh. How do I wash the nappies? Most manufacturers recommend washing the nappies at either 40 degrees or 60 degrees (check individual items) with non biological powder. They also recommend that nappies are pre-washed before use to boost absorbency. |
